Itinerary Details

Day 1: Windhoek to Sossusvlei area - 330km (205miles) - ±4H55min

You can start your trip between 08:00 and 09:00 south-west to the iconic Namib Desert, known to be the world’s oldest desert and an area with one of the most picturesque landscapes in Namibia. You’ll pass through the scenic mountain ranges of Auas and Khomas Hochland on your journey into the desert, and head down from Namibia’s central plateau.

You’ll traverse some of the most breathtaking scenery on route to your destination of Sesriem. The Namib-Naukluft National Park features open stretches of land and petrified dunes. The park was initially founded to conserve Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra population.

Coming out of the mountainous area, you’ll reach the vast open plains open plains until you arrive at the tiny town of Solitaire for highly recommended coffee and pastries. This place is famed for McGregor’s bakery which has earned its reputation through its delicious apple pie.

You’ll arrive at your lodge in the afternoon hours and can then unwind and relax.

After an early breakfast, you can head out to the famous sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

As the oldest desert in the world, it displays brilliantly coloured sand dunes that are considered some of the largest in the world. The landscapes include remarkable mountains and rock outcrops, naturally carved canyons, tremendous gravel plains, and towering and captivating sand dunes.

You’ll drive for 65km (40miles) from the Sossusvlei National Park entrance before you reach the areas known as Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, which is characterized by a white dry clay pan and is one of the most photographed spaces in Namibia. The views of the different dune formations are quite spectacular coupled with the intriguing camel thorn trees, the salsola and other desert flora.

Once you’re done enjoying the dunes, you can visit the Sesriem canyon close to the Sesriem campsite for yet another interesting geology sight.

You’ve come to the end of your tour today and would need to hit the road back to Windhoek after breakfast.

One of the best ways to truly appreciated the majestic nature of the dunes is from above.  Taking a scenic flight or balloon ride over the dunes is captivating as it allows you to truly capture the astounding size of the dunes and the endless sea of rolling desert. You can conduct this activity this morning if you are keen.

Your drive will take you back to the central plateau of Namibia, and an increase in height above sea level. Driving through the stunning mountains, you can stop by the village of Klein-Aub in the Rehoboth constituency for an exceptional coffee tasting experience. You’ll then transit via the town of Rehoboth, before finally arriving in Windhoek in the late afternoon.
