Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa

On the southern tip of Africa sits an almost impossibly picturesque city at the foot of a great flat mountain. The thriving waters of the Atlantic Ocean wash onto its stunning beaches, as pristine today as when the first Europeans set foot on them hundreds of years ago. Little did those early explorers realize this spot would become the birthplace of a country and many of its peoples and cultures. It’s no wonder Cape Town is affectionately known by its inhabitants as the Mother City. A coming-together of cultures, cuisines and landscapes, there’s nowhere quite like Cape Town, a singularly beautiful city crowned by the magnificent Table Mountain National Park.

Your flight arrives in Cape Town today, and this will be a day to relax and acclimate before exploring the city and surroundings the next day.

Today you will be collected by our guide to visit historic locations such as the Castle of Good Hope, the Slave Lodge (Iziko Museum) which together give a quick history of Cape Town and the Dutch mercantile empire of the 17th and 18th centuries.

You will make your way to the Table Mountain National Park and go up to the top of Table Mountain. There is a cableway to the top with a revolving cable car going to the top of the almost 4000 feet high “table”. There are magnificent views of the city, the bay, and surrounding countryside. The vegetation is all from the Cape Floral Kingdom one of the 5 unique plant kingdoms in the world and the smallest. However, it must be remembered this ascent is weather dependent and we will see some alternative locations, like the Kirstenbosch Gardens; one of the world’s most beautiful botanical gardens set on the slopes of the mountain, if the mountain is wearing its “tablecloth” of cloud or if there are high winds the cableway closes. In this case, this activity will be pushed on to one of your other days in Cape Town.

Your tour guide will collect you from your hotel in the morning for this tour which exposes you to the stunning views of sea and mountains for which the Cape of Good Hope is world-renowned. The Cape of Good Hope the furthest point south on the peninsula.

You’ll enter Cape Point Nature Reserve which is one of the national parks with many species of antelope and many other animals. Cape Point is the meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. You’ll catch the funicular railway to get up to the lighthouse with expansive views of both oceans.

You will then drive over the Chapmans Peak, one of the world’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, visit the picturesque fishing harbour of Hout Bay at its foot. You’ll also drive through Simonstown; a picturesque naval port where the South African navy is docked, and you will visit Boulders Beach with its famous African Penguins before returning to Cape Town for the evening at your leisure.

You will be collected this morning and start the day off with a master sommelier tasting. Here you get an in-depth education about the wines in the region.

Franschhoek is one of South Africa’s oldest settlements, founded in 1688 by French Huguenots, and is surrounded by vineyards and craggy mountains. It’s only an hour from Cape Town and is the perfect escape from the city, a place to winery-hop, eat at gourmet restaurants, and relax by the pool enjoying the stunning scenery.

Accompanied by a cheese & wine pairing, olive oil & cured meats. Start the morning off with a guided drive through historic Stellenbosch and onto our first farm for a cellar tour and wine & chocolate pairing. Our 2nd farm is a boutique wine estate for intimate cheese & wine pairing with the wine maker when she is around Over the stunning Stellenbosch mountains, we head to the cuisine capital of SA, Franschhoek. Here we learn how the French Huguenots settled in this valley and influenced South Africa’s wine history. This, only to be followed by a tasting at an award-winning estate.

In Franschhoek you will have the chance to walk off your lunch, strolling down the main road. For our last stop we visit a farm situated on the foot of the mountains for yet another world class wine tasting.

We visit different wine estates in both regions (famous farms and some hidden gems only known to locals).

  • Pair a variety of locally produced world-class cheeses.
  • Cellar and vineyard tour, teaching us how wine is made, how to taste wine, food and wine pairing, what bottle to order at restaurants…
  • A beautiful light lunch is served in the middle of the wine lands overlooking the Franschhoek valley.
  • A diverse range of wine styles.
  • Local treats of cured meats paired with selected wines.
  • Artisanal chocolate (Fair trade accredited) paired with different wines.
  • Stroll down the beautiful main road of Franschhoek.

The Franschhoek Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of the Cape Winelands, just about an hour from Cape Town. The valley is characterized by rolling vineyards and fields and is encircled almost entirely by scenic mountains. To this day, the village has kept a certain boho French chic. In July, it becomes almost entirely French when it hosts Bastille Day festivities, one of the many events on the almost year-round calendar of wine, food and literary festivals.

Breakfast in Franschhoek and an early morning transfer from Franschhoek to Cape Town International Airport for your flight to Windhoek, Namibia.

Namibia is mostly arid, the spectacular landscape resembles Mars, with vast expanses of rocky mountains and canyons, vast orange and white sand dunes, and empty savannas, while the rugged Atlantic coastline is one of the most treacherous in the world.

Namibia is also the perfect country to experience the trials and tribulations of Africa for the first time. It’s safe (mostly), the official language is English, the cost of travel is affordable, it offers an exceptional wildlife experience, and its unique landscapes are some of the most impressive in the world.

We provide you with a comprehensive two (2) hour complimentary tour which will start at the iconic Christuskirche in central Windhoek, and thereafter a short drive to the Bahnhof (old train station) is on the cards. We will also get an opportunity to drive down Independence Avenue, which will allow you to see some of the city’s old architecture. We will then make our way to the Old location cemetery as well as the township of Katutura, including a short stop at informal settlements, and a visit to the Penduka Women’s centre.

There are lots of attractive green areas in the centre of Windhoek flanked by both modern buildings and fine German-colonial architecture. This city in Namibia is clean and orderly, and the pace of life is busy but not overwhelming.

Historically known as a residential area for racial segregation during apartheid, Katutura symbolizes Namibia’s dark past (and even in some way present). While the city has left that chapter behind, Katutura became the backbone of Windhoek.

We embark on our journey north to the Erindi Private Game Reserve (alternatively Okonjati Game Reserve if Erindi is unavailable), one of Africa’s largest privately owned game reserves.

This will be approximately a 2h30min drive from Windhoek. We plan to arrive just after noon and enjoy a wonderful lunch upon arrival, after which we will give our guests some time to relax waterhole-side at our lodge.

The late afternoon game drive is optional today to experience incredible views of this area, be familiarized with its fauna and flora, as well as have an opportunity to see the wide selection of wildlife which call this area their home.

A lovely buffet dinner is on the cards for tonight.

We will wake up quite early morning for a light breakfast before going on the game drive starting around 06:30 and then be back at our accommodation with plenty of time to unwind before lunch and finally go on our afternoon game drive which starts around 16:00.

This will give us another opportunity to catch a glimpse of what we might have missed on the previous game drive(s). Erindi Private Game Reserve houses a large population of wildlife, including crocodile, hippopotamus, Black Wildebeests and many more which are not found in the famous Etosha National Park, and the endangered African wild dog which are not a common sighting in some of the big wildlife parks too.

We will also hope to see some lion prides, elephants, antelopes and other carnivores. Since 1998, careful management of the Erindi Private Game Reserve has ensured the recovery of the ecological balance between vegetation, herbivores, and predators, so that the numbers and diversity of the species here lead to sustainable land utilization and socio-economic benefits for all in the area. After learning so much about the Erindi Game Reserve, we head back to our lodge for another fabulous dinner!

Today we continue our journey with a scenic drive to the cozy town of Swakopmund on the mighty Atlantic Ocean. On this drive, we will pass the famous Spitzkoppe area, as well as the Erongo mountain ranges.

On 4 of August 1892 the crew of gunboat called ”Hyena” erected two beacons to mark the landing site which symbolized the laying of the foundation stone of Swakopmund.

We will arrive in time for a little tour around the town to acquaint ourselves with and book a few activities that you might want to enjoy, i.e. living desert tour, skydiving, sandboarding, paragliding, scenic flights and much more, after which we can enjoy a fine seafood dinner overlooking the ocean.

This coastal town is known for its variety of activities that it offers to travellers. The afternoon is a relaxed one, where our guests can do some curio shopping or just wonder the lively markets of this unique city.

We have our final dinner at the coast this evening, as we look forward to our time in the Sossusvlei area the follow day.

We start our journey with a drive south-west to the Namib Naukluft Park, one of the most scenic landscapes in Namibia. In 1966 “Game Reserve No. 3” was de-proclaimed, and the Namib Desert Park was established in its stead.

The Namib Desert Park included a small area north of the Swakop River where the Welwitschia grow, as well as the Moon Landscape east of Swakopmund. In 1979 two more large areas were added. The Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park was included such that the Naukluft Mountains now formed part of the protected area. It previously comprised 14 commercial farms that were bought by government to protect the Hartmann Mountain zebra.

On route to the Sesriem area, which is the gateway to the mighty dunes of Sossusvlei, we will pass Kuiseb and Gaub mountain passes, where will also have brief stops to take more of Namibia’s beauty in.

Solitaire is a great stopover for a lunchtime snack and houses one of the most famous bakeries in the country, which is situated in the heart of the Namib Desert. We will arrive in the late afternoon at our lodge, and so you will have a chance to recover from the long drive before we enjoy a lovely dinner in the Namib Desert.

This morning, we will head into the Sosusvlei National Park, as we depart quite early and drive into this great sand sea this morning. We embark on a short journey in discovering the famous Deadvlei and Sossusvlei areas, but before we get there, a short stop at dune 45 is a must.

We will walk amongst the great dunes and photograph this captivating landscape. We may also decide to climb one of the World’s highest climbable dunes, the ‘Big Daddy’. In the afternoon when the temperatures have subsided, we will visit the Sesriem canyon, another amazing geological feature in the area before our wonderful buffet dinner.

Today we have reached the end of our journey and head back to the capital city Windhoek via a few small settlements in the southern part, and the town of Rehoboth.

We’ll stop in Klein-Aub to stretch our legs, and for a unique coffee tasting experience around noon, before transiting to Windhoek, as we hope for a late afternoon arrival.
