Itinerary Details

Day 1: Maun

The town of Maun is the third largest in Botswana. It is an eclectic mix of modern buildings and native huts. There are shopping malls, banks, restaurants, a few hotels and some happening bars. Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and the administrative centre of Ngamiland. It is also the headquarters of numerous safari and air-charter operations.

Most tourists enter the Okavango through Maun, situated at the gateway to the Delta and Moremi Game Reserve. Maun International Airport which was officially opened in 1996 after extensive renovations, is serviced by Air Botswana and there are direct flights to Johannesburg in South Africa.

Your guide will greet you at 07:30 at a pre-arranged meeting point in Maun. From there, you’ll journey to the Moremi Game Reserve/Khwai, one of Botswana’s premier wilderness areas, featuring both swamp and dry landscapes. The Khwai Community Concession, situated next to the Moremi Game Reserve, offers a unique safari experience in one of Botswana’s most renowned wildlife regions – the Okavango Delta.

Over the next two days, you’ll embark on a quest to discover the rich diversity of wildlife and birds that this region is famous for, all while soaking in the sounds and beauty around you. Expect game drives in the early morning at sunrise and late afternoon at sunset. You’ll be camping at private designated sites, complete with ensuite bush ablutions for each tent.

Khwai Community Concession is known for its large herds of elephants and buffalo. Lions are frequently spotted in the area, along with thriving leopard populations. Other wildlife includes lechwe antelopes, giraffes, wild dogs, hyenas, and migrating species like zebras and antelope.

Other wildlife includes lechwe antelopes, giraffes, wild dogs, hyenas, and migrating species like zebras and antelope. Khwai is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with a variety of species such as egrets, cranes, vultures, and eagles, often seen hunting catfish along the waterways.

Enjoy game drives to investigate the area surrounding the Khwai River (Northeast Moremi/Khwai Concession). Explore the waterways of the Khwai River on a traditional mokoro (a wooden, dugout canoe), expertly guided by one of our local polers.

Your next stop is Chobe National Park, known for its stunning and varied landscapes.

Savuti (or Savute) is a remote corner of Chobe National Park renowned for its explosive big game viewing and strangely unpredictable water channel. As you continue your wildlife search, you’ll navigate the drier Savuti region, where herds of bull elephants roam the plains.

Savuti is renowned for its predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and even African wild dogs. Camping will be at private designated sites, each equipped with ensuite bush ablutions.

Savuti is famous for its mysterious and fascinating channel. It runs a distance of 100 kilometers from the Chobe River, through a gap in the sand ridge, to the Mababe Depression. Falling only approximately 18 meters, this channel brings water from the Chobe to Mababe, creating a small marsh where it enters the Depression.

During the summer months of November-April as the rains fill the myriad of pans and pools in the channel and as the Savute marshland regenerates, vast herds of Zebra, Wildebeest and other Plains Game will flock to the area. The incredible wildlife sightings and numbers are usually the biggest attraction for visitors to Savute, but the area also has some interesting and unusual features.  Rocky outcrops – one aptly named “Leopard Rock” dot the northern part of the area, some with primitive rock art, thought to be by the San people.

We’ll embark on game drives to discover the wonders of Southern Chobe National Park – Savute/ZweiZwei.

Next, journey north to the Chobe River, where your game drives will wind along the riverbanks, accompanied by the calls of the majestic African Fish Eagle.

The Chobe River Floodplain is an incredible area for game viewing, where water attracts large herds of buffalo, elephants, zebras, and other herbivores. With an abundance of prey, predators are likely to be nearby. Sightings of wide-ranging and abundant game and birdlife –including the Big 5 as Rhino begin to venture this far north – are virtually guaranteed all year round.

The sunsets in this region are often breathtaking, providing fantastic photographic opportunities. You’ll be camping in private designated campsites, each equipped with ensuite bush ablutions in the tents.

You’ll continue your adventure with game drives to explore Northern Chobe and the floodplain.
Chobe region covers a vast area spanning 11,700 square kilometers and is arguably host to the most varied ecosystem in Botswana due to the diversity of vegetation, forest, pan and floodplain habitats, as well as the permanently flowing Chobe River.
An astonishing one third of the Globe’s African Elephant population lives in Botswana – approximately 120,000 Elephant; the majority of whom traverse and inhabit the Chobe region. It is not uncommon to see spectacles of several hundred Elephant in the area whilst on one a game activity. This is just one of the reasons for Chobe being the most-visited destination in Botswana – another being that access to the park and river is available to a huge range of traveller with regular international daily flights and a good road network.

The safari concludes at 12:00 PM on Day 7 in Kasane after a cruise on the Chobe River. This experience gives you a closer view of aquatic animals and birds that are not easily approached during a traditional safari. Lunch will be your own expense once back in Kasane.

For those heading to Kasane Airport, nearby lodges, or Victoria Falls, transfer pick-up can be arranged starting at 12:15 PM.

If you’re staying at one of the local lodges in Kasane, your guide will be happy to drop you off. We’re pleased to assist with any post-tour accommodations, activities, and transfers to Victoria Falls airport or lodges for an additional fee.
