Itinerary Details
Day 1: Windhoek to Harnas Wildlife Foundation - 304 km (189miles) - ±3H10min
Your journey takes you to the Harnas Wildlife Foundation today, which is a charitable organisation and one of the few orphanages and wildlife sanctuaries for wild animals in Southern Africa. A sizable number of animals including lions, leopards, cheetahs, endangered Africa wild dogs, baboons and tortoises reside on this 10 000-hectare (24 700 acres) farm which has been transformed into a wildlife protection haven.
The owners of this beautiful reserve have dedicated their lives to establishing the most adequate and secure home possible for abandoned or orphaned wild animals and succeeded in creating a Noah’s Ark in the African Savannah.
Today these animals are transferred to the Harnas Wildlife Foundation in order to protect them from being shot outright.
You should aim to arrive around noon, in time for lunch, and a chance to explore the place and enjoy some of the activities on offer here.
You can enjoy a lovely dinner at the restaurant.
Day 2: Harnas, Namibia to Ghanzi, Kalahari, Botswana - 390 km (242miles) - ±3H55min
This morning requires an early start for an Ancient Skills San Excursion after breakfast, and thereafter you should set off from the Harnas Wildlife Foundation, Namibia, to make provision for border control as you’ll cross into the lovely country of Botswana today.
Once you clear border control and make your way into Botswana, you can enjoy a lovely drive to your destination Ghanzi.
Your afternoon arrival at the accommodation will give you a chance to enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the heart of the Kalahari.
You can enjoy a lovely dinner at your lodge or in the town of Ghanzi this evening.
Day 3: Ghanzi to Maun/Okavango Delta - 285 km (177miles) - ±3H45min
Ghanzi – also known as “The capital of the Kalahari” must be one of Botswana’s most intriguing towns – situated in the middle of nowhere and separated from the rest of the world by hundreds of kilometres of roads.
The first and probably major impression you will have of the interminable journey from Gaborone to Ghanzi is the sheer monotony of the landscape. For the most part the terrain is flat and featureless, with some scrub bushes, thorn trees and grasslands. In the summer the heat is sweltering, in winter the drive is made more tolerable by cooler temperatures. The road is excellent tarmac.
Once, parts of this vast region were populated only by Bushmen (Basarwa) who had perfected survival strategies for living in this inhospitable land. Later the Bakgalagadi arrived and today live in Kalahari villages such as Ncojane, Matsheng and Kang.
Today’s journey will take you northeast to the town of Maun, passing through a few villages along the way. You’ll reach Maun in the early afternoon hours and can enjoy a relaxed afternoon at the lodge and book the optional activities on offer here.
Day 4: Maun/Okavango Delta
For today, we recommend that you book a full day Mokoro tour on the majestic Okavango Delta or opt for a full day game drive into the Moremi Game reserve. You also have the option of conducting a self-driving excursion into Moremi Game Reserve.
The amazing traditional canoes (mokoros) are perfectly designed to maneuver through the narrow waterways of the delta and give you a chance to go further into the delta allowing better game viewing in this area.
Mokoros carry three people, two seated passengers and one driver. The driver stands in the rear of the canoe, (a real feat of balance), and uses a long wooden pole to propel and steer the Mokoro through the twisting channels.
You can enjoy dinner in the town of Maun this evening.
Day 5: Maun/Okavango Delta to Nata, Botswana - 310 km (193miles) - ±3H15min
You’re back on the road again as you head to Nata on the bounds of the Magkadikgadi Salt Pans just to the east of Maun.
The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park and the Nxai Pan National Park are situated on the western border of the large Makgadikgadi salt pans, southeast of the Okavango Delta, Botswana. The Makgadikgadi Pans are one of the biggest salt pans worldwide. They are formed by two large and thousands of small pans with an area of more than 8400 km². The complete area of pan systems covers an area of more than 16000 km². The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is situated south of the Nxai Pan National Park, and forms with its huge salt pans an impressive surreal landscape.
The name Makgadikgadi means ‘vast, lifeless land’. For those who prefer solitude and silence this is paradise, as even during the high season people are scarce here. The Makgadikgadi National Park is not visited so much because of its fauna, but rather its solitude, remoteness and its harsh beauty. Nonetheless, depending on the season, impressive animal populations can be viewed.
You are booked for a Makgadikgadi Pan Drive and sundowner drink this afternoon, followed by dinner.
Day 6: Nata to Kasane, Botswana - 316km (196miles) - ±3H20min
You depart to the gateway to the Chobe National Park today, Kasane, which is an important point of debarkation for the nearby Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Livingstone in Zambia, and Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. Quite impressive!
Spread out along the banks of the Chobe River, Kasane presents a huge collection of hotels, guest houses and campsites that accommodate all the visitors to the national park. Some are superbly located, with the breathtaking views of the river and its wildlife.
Day 7: Kasane, Chobe National Park, Botswana
You can enjoy an early breakfast this morning, as we’ve taken the liberty of booking you on a game drive to enjoy the wonderful sights and sounds of the Chobe National Park, famed for its vast Elephant and Hippo populations.
The crocodiles and hippos thrive in the forbidding Chobe River and on the land side there is often displays of different antelope, buffalo and often even the Big Cats come to the riverbanks for their sundowner drink. The Chobe River provides a very broad habitat for bird life and it is possible to see many stunning species of birds.
The afternoon is a chance to explore the town of Kasane, and perhaps visit some currency exchange bureaus as you will require US$ for our trip to Victoria Falls the next day if you haven’t already done so.
You’ve been booked for a lovely and relaxing sunset boat cruise this afternoon to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Chobe River, famous for its vast Elephant and Hippo populations, before your dinner at the lodge.
Day 8: Chobe National Park, Kasane, Botswana to Victoria falls town, Zimbabwe - 75km (47miles) - ±1H10min
Today you will cross the border into Zimbabwe around noon, as you’ll be collected by a local Zimbabwean guide for your relatively short drive to the town of Victoria Falls. Your vehicle will remain in Kasane and will be collected by our driver.
You will be accommodated close to the banks of the Zambezi River, and you will have some time to explore the safe and cozy town of Victoria Falls on your own and visit the mighty Victoria Falls. The view of the waterfall from the Zimbabwean bank is captivatingly beautiful.
Your accommodation will assist you in organizing and booking the many optional activities available in Victoria Falls this morning. These include white water rafting, bungee jumping, Elephant-back rides, Lion walks, and scenic-flights to mention but a few. We recommend a short walk for some High Tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel, with this grand 111-year-old Five Star hotel boasting impressive views of the Victoria Falls Bridge and the magnificent Victoria Falls themselves.
Day 9: Victoria Falls town, Zimbabwe
You‘ve come to the end of our tour. You certainly have the option to stay longer in Victoria Falls should you wish to.
We would recommend a late afternoon flight back home on this day, giving you some time to conduct some of the morning activities that you would like. These include bungee jumping, gouge swings, crocodile cage diving, white-water rafting, but also more relaxing activities like morning game drives, lion walks, and elephant back safaris.
