Itinerary Details

Sesriem is the “Gateway to Sossusvlei”. It is a small village called after a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab rivier in the local sedimentary rock and will be our destination. We plan to depart from Windhoek at 10:00 this morning, heading south-west to the iconic Namib Desert, an area with one of the most dramatic landscapes in Namibia. We traverse the Namib Naukluft mountain range in central Namibia. The southern part of the mountain range forms the easternmost part of the famous Namib-Naukluft National Park. The northern part of these mountains is occupied by privately held farms which are known for their desert adapted wildlife, including mountain zebras and leopards. We take a short break from our drive at a remote settlement called Solitaire, at the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, which has been a welcome stopover for more than 60 years. We plan to arrive at our camp in the late afternoon to unwind and relax enjoy the vistas, before a proper introduction to this area by your guide as you watch the beautiful sunset before dinner. We will retire to bed early this evening in order to prepare for a pre-dawn start the following day.

An early wakeup call means that there will be enough time for pre-dawn snacks and coffee before heading out to the famous sand dunes of Sossusvlei while the temperature is still mild, and when the dune contrasts are at their best.

Our final destination, Deadvlei, or the ‘dead marsh”, is one of the most unique places of Namibia. It is a world-famous White Clay pan which is situated near the Sossusvlei. The views of the different dune formations are quite spectacular coupled with the intriguing camel thorn trees, and other desert flora.

We will enjoy a lovely breakfast among the dunes but will head to our camp for some lunch after our activity. We make our way to the Sesriem canyon in the afternoon for yet another interesting geology tutorial. A long day will come to an end with another lovely fire cooked dinner, as we enjoy our final night in the desert.

We head back to Windhoek this morning. Historically, Namibia’s Klein Aub was known for copper mining from 1964 to 1987, with silver as an accompanying element. However, the closing of the mines saw Klein Aub lose residents, skills and much of its vibrance. We have come to the end of our journey today and our drive takes us back to the central plateau of Namibia, and an increase in height above sea level.

We drove through the stunning Namib Naukluft mountains, before coming to the village of Klein-Aub in the Rehoboth constituency for an exceptional coffee tasting experience. We will transit via the town of Rehoboth and take a brief break there before finally arriving in Windhoek in the late afternoon.
